This PhD will develop quantitative imaging techniques for NDE. This will particularly investigate the use of full waveform inversion (FWI) and how this overlaps with other methods such as ray tomography and diffraction tomography to produce accurate reconstructions under practical NDE limitations, such as limited access. FWI has achieved great success in geophysics and this work is part of an effort to bring these advantages over to NDE. The underlying theory of the different methods will be evaluated to understand where differences occur and learn whether different aspects can be combined to produce improved performance.

Investigating applications will be an important part of the work, liaising with industrial partners across the RCNDE sectors. This includes the oil industry for corrosion quantification techniques including guided wave tomography and other sectors for imaging localised material degradation.
