This will look at the development of 3D modelling capability to accurately model complex geometries in pipes and welds, of interest to in line inspection for the petrochemical industryIn particular, this EngD will study ultrasonic interaction with complex-shaped cracking including tilted, hook, rough and branched, developing routines to generate synthetic data, exploiting the capabilities of the Pogo package. This will need new development of underlying areas such as 3D meshing techniques, defect generation approaches, absorbing boundaries and statistical modelling, and what impact this will have on the ultrasonic response. Ultimately this would have impact in enabling improved inspection to be developed.
